Karnataka Hijab Row: SC says No to Urgent Hearing, will take up the plea at an 'appropriate time'

Karnataka Hijab Row: The Supreme Court of India today denied urgent hearing request on the matter of Karnataka High Court’s order on Hijab Row Matter. The apex court said that the Karnataka High Court must decide on the matter first and that it would take up the matter at ‘an appropriate time’.

Karnataka Hijab Row: On another twist to the on-going issue of Karnataka Hijab Row, the Supreme Court of India has rejected the plea seeking urgent hearing on the matter with regards to the interim order passed by the High Court. Hearing senior advocate Devadatt Kamat’s SLP on the interim order of the Karnataka High Court the court said that HC should decide on the matter first and that it would take up the matter at ‘an appropriate time’. The petition before Supreme Court was filed challenging interim order of Karnataka High Court which restrained students from wearing any religious attire to campuses which may instigate anyone during its Thursday’s hearing. The matter thereafter was adjourned and is scheduled to be heard on Monday now.

HC Hearing on Hijab Row on Monday

On Thursday, a 3-judge bench consisting of Chief Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi, Justice J M Khazi and Justice Krishna S Dixit, while hearing the case regarding Wearing of Hijab at Educational Institutions was had passed interim order directing student from not wearing any religious attire on campus that may instigate any person. During the hearing on Thursday, the HC allowed schools to reopen for regular classes across the state but in compliance with its interim order. The court had argued that in the interest of peace and maintenance of tranquillity, it is important to pass the interim order. The matter is posted for further hearing on Monday – 14th Febraury 2022.

Karnataka Schools upto Class 10 Reopening on Monday

Following the HC’s interim order, the Karnataka State Government also issued directions for reopening of schools in the state. Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai announced that schools in the state will reopen in phase-wise manner with physical lectures for Class 1 to 10 students starting from 10th February – Monday. This will be followed by Reopening of PU Colleges and Degree Colleges in the coming weeks, for which directions will be issued by the state government later on.
