On Sunday, while addressing an event organized by the RSS-linked Sanskrit Bharati, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu said that the medium of teaching for students upto Class 10 should be their mother tongue. He also urged the Government to take necessary steps in this regard. He also made it clear that English should be taught as well but the foundation should be in the mother tongue.
He said that everyone should make a point to learn Sanskrit in order to preserve our rich heritage as an Indian. Sanskrit has been a vital link between Indian languages in terms of vocabulary and thus the Government and the non-government organizations should come together to preserve, promote and propagate the language. A majority of the Indian language have originated from Sanskrit and can be said to the country’s ominous unifying force, said Naidu.
The Vice President also said that the Sanskrit language contains useful advice for issues such as health, water and environment and as such research takes place on the subject in several countries. Sanskrit was the original medium of teaching in India before the advent of foreign rulers. Universities such as Takshshila and Nalanda used Sanskrit to impart education to the students. All subjects including Astronomy (Surya Siddhatham), Warfare (Dhanur Veda), Economics (Arthasasthram), and Physics (Bouthikam) were taught in Sanskrit.
