In a pivotal judgment, the Supreme Court has granted an additional attempt for students who withdrew from colleges between November 5 and November 18, 2024, to appear for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced.
This ruling adheres to the Joint Admission Board's (JAB) earlier notification, which allowed three attempts, countering the abrupt reduction to two attempts made within 13 days.
SC Grants Interim Relief to JEE Aspirants
Justice Gavai acknowledged the unique circumstances of this year's notification while delivering the order. While the court recognized that limiting attempts may be a sound policy in principle, it criticized the sudden reversal, stating it caused undue harm to students who had acted based on the initial notification.
Balancing the interests of the students and JAB's rationale, the court issued an interim order. It stated that students who withdrew from colleges during the specified period, relying on the earlier criteria, would be allowed to register and appear for JEE Advanced under the three-attempt eligibility rule.
Government Supports Two-Attempt Rule
The Solicitor General of India, Tushar Mehta, speaking on behalf of JAB, supported the decision to allow only two attempts for JEE Advanced. He explained that giving three chances might distract students who join regular engineering colleges but still try for IITs. The new rule aims to help students focus on their current studies and avoid wasting time after two failed attempts.
