JEE Main, NEET 2020: According to the latest update six cabinet ministers from West Bengal, Punjab, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand have jointly filed a petition in the Supreme Court demanding cancellation of the NEET and JEE Main 2020 (second-phase) examinations. The ministers have reportedly demanded cancellation of the national medical and engineering entrance exams owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. JEE Main 2020 has been scheduled to be conducted from 1st to 6th September 2020 while NEET has been scheduled on 13th September 2020.
The Ministers have sought review of the apex court’s order to cancel NEET UG exams citing ‘life must go on’. The state minsters in the review petition have sought for cancellation of the exams keeping in mind safety, security and right to life of candidates waiting to appear in the JEE Main and NEET 2020 exams. The Minsters have also added that conducting NEET/JEE would be impossible as provisions, including transport and lodging have to be made for lakhs of students appearing in the examinations during the pandemic.
Among the review review petitioners are WB law minister Maloy Ghatak, Rajasthan health minister Dr Raghu Sharma, Chhattisgarh food minister Amarjeet Bhagat, Jharkhand finance minister Rameshwar Oraon, Maharashtra education minister Uday R Samant and Punjab health minister Balbir Singh Sidhu.
The apex court had earlier refused to interfere with the conduct of JEE Main and NEET 2020 examinations stating that life has to go on and students cannot afford to lose a precious year. It had also dismissed a plea seeking direction to the conducting body, the National Testing Agency, citing that the plea had no merit what-so-ever.
