To streamline the educational records system, the Ministry of Education has introduced the Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry (APAAR). This initiative aims to track the academic records of approximately 30 crore students in India, from school to higher education.
To support this, the National Testing Agency (NTA) has urged students to use their APAAR ID and Aadhaar authentication during the NEET UG 2025 registration and exam process.
The NTA recently announced that the NEET UG 2025 registration will begin soon. The agency emphasized that using updated credentials, including APAAR and Aadhaar IDs, will make the verification process smoother and ensure better integrity during the exam.
What is APAAR ID?
APAAR is a part of the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020) and the National Credit Framework (NCrF). Every student in India will be assigned a unique 12-digit APAAR ID, which will consolidate their academic records throughout their life. This ID will serve as a “One Nation, One Student ID,” acting as a digital academic passport to track all educational achievements.
To support this initiative, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has directed higher education institutions to upload the last three years' credit data onto the Academic Bank of Credits (ABC) portal by June 2025. This will help over 4 crore students from 1,855 academic institutions to have their records available digitally by 2024.
How is APAAR ID created?
The process to create an APAAR ID includes the following steps:
- Verification of student details at the school level.
- Parental consent for minor students.
- Authentication of the student’s identity through the school.
- Once verified, the APAAR ID is created and stored securely in DigiLocker for easy access.
This new system aims to simplify record-keeping, improve data security, and support a seamless academic journey for students across India.
