Karnataka Hijab Row

Karnataka Hijab Row: With protests around ‘hijab’ row intensifying, Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj S Bommai has ordered closure of all schools and colleges in Karnataka for next 3-days. The news about closure of educational institutions, especially High Schools and Colleges was issued by the Karnataka CM to maintain peace in the state. He has also appealed all parties, including students, teachers and management of schools and colleges to maintain peace and harmony.

CM Appeals for Peace on Twitter

As the row around wearing of Hijab at educational institutions intensifies, Chief Minister has also appealed all citizens to maintain peace and harmony. Taking to twitter, CM Bommai sent out a tweet saying “"I appeal to all the students, teachers and management of schools and colleges as well as people of Karnataka to maintain peace and harmony. I have ordered closure of all high schools and colleges for next three days. All concerned are requested to cooperate.”

Minor Clashes, Stone-pelting reported at Educational Institutions

The appeal comes as right-wing and dalit protestors took to streets raising slogans for and against wearing of Hijabs in Schools and other Educational Institutions. Minor clashes and stone pelting were also reported by local media agencies from Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) College in Udupi and Shivamogga.

HC hearing on Hijab Row to Continue Tomorrow

Along with on-going street protests, Karnataka High Court is also hearing a petition filed on the on-going Hijab Row. The row erupted on 28th December, when management of Kundapur Pre-University College in Udupi denied entry to 6 girls who were wearing hijabs from entering the campus and attending classes. These girls have now moved Karnataka High Court questioning hijab restrictions. The court, which heard the matter today, will continue its hearing tomorrow as well. During the on-going hearing, the court has appealed citizens to maintain peace. Justice Dixit Krishna Shripad while hearing the case said "This court has full faith in the wisdom and virtue of public at large and it hopes that the same would be put to practice.”
