New UGC Chairman Appointed: In change of guard at UGC, the Central Government has named new chairman for the UGC – University Grants Commission. Prof. M. Jagadesh Kumar – who also serves as the Vice Chancellor, VC of Jawaharlal Nehru University, JNU has been appointed as the new chairman of Universities Regulatory Body. The announcement about Prof Kumar taking over as UGC chairman was made today – 4th February 2022, Friday.
Official Notification Released
To confirm the development, Ministry of Education has also issued an official notification which reads “The Central government appoints professor Mamidala Jagadesh vice chancellor, Jawaharlal Nehru University to the post of chairman, University Grants Commission in Level 17 of the Pay Matrix.” It further states that Prof Kumar’s appointment as UGC chairman would continue for a period of five years from the date of assumption of charge or until he attains the age of 65 years, or until further order.
Prof Kumar to take over from Prof. D P Singh
The appointment of Prof Jagadesh Kumar as the UG Chairman comes following the UGC Chairman post got vacant in December, 2021. Prof. D P Singh vacated the position of UGC chairman in December last year following his attainment of retirement age i.e., 65 years. Following this appointment as UGC chairman Prof. M. Jagadesh Kumar will vacate his earlier post as the JNU vice chancellor, as he has already completed 5 years in January 2022. But he has been allowed to continue on the same until a new person is found to fill the position.
About Prof M. Jagadesh Kumar
Prof M. Jagadesh Kumar is a well-known personality in the academic circles. Prior to taking over as JNU VC in 2016, He Professor at IIT Delhi's Electrical Engineering Department. In academic terms, he is widely recognized for his work in Electrical Engineering, Kumar is an India Institute of Technology, IIT Madras alumna. He has also did his Masters and PhD from the same institute.
