The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) results for 2025 have been released, revealing that 14 students achieved a perfect 100 percentile. This marks a significant achievement in one of India's most competitive exams, with the search for top colleges now underway. Historically, IIT Bombay has been the preferred choice for many top JEE candidates.
IIT Bombay has stopped collecting and sharing students' caste information with Public Sector Units (PSUs) during campus placements due to discrimination allegations. The decision follows a complaint filed with the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) in 2023 by Dheeraj Singh, an IIT Kanpur alumnus. Singh claimed that IIT Bombay and other institutions were enabling discriminatory practices by sharing caste data with recruiters, potentially biasing against marginalized students.
The NCSC directed IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, and the Ministry of Education to submit an action report. IIT Bombay clarified that while they previously collected caste data to assist PSUs in verifying documents for reserved positions, the practice was stopped in 2024. The institute stated its placement office wasn't directly involved in the process but acknowledged past category profiling, which has been discontinued.
This isn't the first time IIT Bombay has faced scrutiny; in 2023, the suicide of a first-year student led to allegations of caste bias, though an investigation found no direct evidence. IIT Bombay has since introduced anti-discrimination guidelines to promote inclusivity.
