Ministry of Human Resource and Development, Government of India has asked the IIMs to reserve faculty posts for candidates from Scheduled Tribes, Scheduled Castes, Backward Classes and Economically Weaker Sections.

mhrdThe Ministry of Human Resource and Development has ordered the IIMs to reserve positions in the faculty for candidates belonging to the Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), Others Backward Classes (OBC) and Economically Weaker Sections (EWS). The Indian Institute of Management across the country have been citing a letter issued in the 1970s issued by the Department of Personnel and Training that states that technical and scientific posts are exempted from reservation. The institutes claim that their faculty posts are technical and hence are exempted from reservation.

The HRD Ministry on Wednesday issued an order where it has been stated that the order for faculty reservation ‘supersedes’ all previous “orders/notifications/communication. The order also dictates that IIMs will now be required to prepare reservation rosters and recruitment of faculty members in the future will have to be done as per the roster.

Reservation in case of appointing faculty members in the IIMs has been a controversial issue for years. Presently, there is no reservation in the teaching posts in the 20 premier business schools. In the past, the government has advised the IIMs to adopt reservations in faculty posts but a directive in this regard has never been issued before. The IIMs, on the other hand, claimed that though they were not providing reservation, candidates from socially and economically backward sections were given due regard. The data shared by the HRD Ministry maintains that over 90% of faculty members in the 20 IIMS are from the General category.

The directive from the Ministry comes in the wake of the parliamentary committee on the welfare of OBCs on Tuesday. The Government was questioned over the continued evasion of OBC reservation in educational institutions, especially the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas, Kendriya Vidyalayas and the IIMs.
