DUSU Election 2024: As per the latest updates, the Delhi High Court has directed the DU Vice Chancellor and other considered respondents to address the representations asking for implementation of 50% women's reservation in DU Students Union Elections. The petition filed has emphasised the requirement of gender equality in student governance.
The Delhi HC bench led by Justice Manmohan, and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela also instructed the authorities to decide on the petition as per the law within three weeks. The petition sought directions from the Central Government, UGC and Delhi University to reserve 50% of seats for female students in DU students' union elections and college students' union elections.
The petition has also asked that following the recent parliament enactment of 33% reservation for women in state assembly and parliamentary elections under the Nari Shakti Vandan Abhiyaan, DU must ensure equal representation and participation of female students in the election.
Recently a notification regarding the DUSU elections was issued after which the nomination process will begin on September 17, 2024, and elections will be held on September 27, 2024.
As per reports, the petitioner mentioned that there is a need for gender equality in student elections and sought to direct the university to comply with the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations. Union Ministry of Human Resource Development, following the order by the Supreme Court, formed a committee under J M Lyngdoh, a former chief election commissioner, to make recommendations on issues related to student bodies and union elections conducted in universities, colleges and higher education institutions across the country
