NLU Delhi’s 50% Domicile Based Reservation Stayed: Delhi High Court ordered a stay on the 50% domicile based reservation rule brought about by the National Law University, Delhi aka NLU Delhi today. In its order,  the Delhi High Court has ordered that status quo as of previous years should be maintained with respect to LL.B, LLM admissions for academic session 2020-21. Earlier, the law university as part of the official admission notification had set aside 50% seats at the institute for students who are domicile of Delhi or those who pass out their qualifying exam from the institutes located within the National Capital Territory.

Delhi HC stays Domicile Based Reservation

Delhi High Court’s divisional bench comprising of Justices Hima Kohli and Subramonium Prasad was hearing the case that challenged the domicile based reservation policy that was propsed by the NLU Delhi as part of its admission procedure for 2020-21 academic session. This has been set aside by the High Court. In addition to this, the court has also asked the law university to issue a fresh a fresh admission notification before 2nd July and publish the same on its website for students and applicants to refer to while applying for admission. The court also directed the institute to extend the application dates for NLU Delhi admission by 1 more week to enable applicants to apply under the new guidelines issued in accordance with its order. The court also noted that the entrance exam for NLU Delhi will take place as per its schedule announced earlier.

What about Domicile Based Reservation in Other Law Universities?

While the Delhi High Court has issued a stay order on the domicile based reservation policy brought in by the NLU Delhi, there are other law universities who also have similar policies in place as far as admission criteria is concerned. As of now, the court’s order has not commented on the admission process for any of these universities. The matter is now posted for its next hearing on 18th August 2020. Currently, NLSIU Bangalore, NUJS Kolkata, NLU Odisha and NALSAR Hyderabad have domicile based reservation policy as part of their admissions process.
