Class 10 Boards: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will be considering a significant compression of Class 10 board exams period from the regular month-long schedule to less than two weeks in order to accommodate a two-exam system starting next year.
This comes in light to the recent development in Class 10 CBSE boards exam to be held twice a year, with one being optional for the students. For more details, read here.
Currently, the Board arranges the Class 10 exam schedule so that no student has two subjects on the same day. This means the exams span over about a month, with breaks ranging from three to ten days between some papers.
However, if the two-exam system is introduced, CBSE might need to shorten the gap between exams, possibly to just one day, to make sure both exams are over and results are declared by June, according to sources.
The issue was discussed at a recent meeting chaired by Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan with officials of the CBSE, Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) and NCERT on conducting the board exams twice a year.
This decision has been taken bearing the structure and aim of NEP 2020 where students are provided an avenue for ease in studies and following examinations. The Education Ministry further has asked the Board to share a draft proposal on how the two exams will be conducted. The Union government wants to introduce two board exams only for CBSE-affiliated schools students of Class 10. “A decision on when to introduce this for Class 12 students will only be taken based on the experience of holding two exams for Class 10 students,” said a government official.

Challenges to CBSE Two-exam System
The board exams usually start in February, and this timeline will likely stay the same with the new two-exam system. Sources mention that holding exams earlier could be difficult because of harsh winter conditions in some areas and might reduce the time available for teaching.
Before introducing this new system, CBSE, the largest national school board in the country, has been trying to solve the challenge of conducting both exams, grading the papers, and announcing the results before the next academic session begins.
