SEBA-AHSEC Merger: The Assam government has introduced a new bill to merge the state boards for classes 10 and 12 into a new body to manage and regulate secondary education. The Assam State School Education Board Bill, 2024 aims to establish a new body to oversee the state’s education system up until class 12.
The proposed bill seeks the merger of the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC) and the Board of Secondary Education, Assam (SEBA) to become the Assam State School Education Board (ASSEB).
The ASSEB Bill aims to regulate, supervise, and develop Secondary Education in the state of Assam. The board will be headed by a chairman who will be nominated by the government. The bill states that an individual vice-chairman will look after each division under the chairman and he or she will be nominated by the government.
Introduction Of ASSEB Bill, 2024
The new Assam State School Education Board will comprise 21 people with a 3-year term that can be extended for an equal period. Education Minister Ranoj Pegu stated the goal of the ASSEB Bill, 2024 is to develop, regulate, and supervise the standards and quality of school education in the state of Assam.
The bill has been introduced in response to the leak of at least two question papers from the Class 10 board exams by SEBA 2023. The Assamese and general science papers were leaked last year. The government and SEBA were compelled to reschedule the examination due to this reason.
Additionally, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma presided over a state cabinet meeting earlier in November last year when the merger decision was made.
