According to the latest news, the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy will be laying the foundation stone for 16 new teaching medical colleges across the state today - May 31, 2021. The Ceremony which will be conducted virtually also marks the completion of the Chief Minister’s 2 years in office.
New teaching medical colleges an increase since 1920
The state has had only 10 medical teaching colleges since 1920 and the new initiative by the state government will increase the number of colleges in the state by 150 percent. A major concern of the state amidst the pandemic is the shortage of medical workforce which is why the number of teaching hospitals has been increased in order to ensure a constant supply of workforce to the health ministry of the state and keep the state prepared for situations like the pandemic in the near future.
Colleges built with estimated Rs. 7880 Crore
The 16 new medical teaching colleges will be set up in Adoni, Amalapuram, Anakapalli, Bapatla, Eluru, Machilipatnam, Markapuram, Madanapalli, Nandyal, Paderu, Palakollu, Penukonda, Pulivendula, Rajahmundry and Vizianagaram costing roughly Rs. 7880 Crore. Apart from the 16 new teaching medical colleges, the Andhra Pradesh state government is also investing a total of Rs. 16000 Crore in restructuring the health infrastructure in the state from primary to tertiary level.
The new hospitals are being built wherever necessary while the old ones will be restructured. The government is also improving the public health system in the state with the CM encouraging the private sector by offering free land to anybody who is ready to build a super specialty hospital with an investment of at least 100 Crores in the next three years.
