For thousands of eager students, a Harvard education is no longer a pipe dream—it's a reality now. Harvard University has stated that beginning with the 2025-26 academic year, undergraduate tuition would be free for students from households earning $200,000 or less per year.
This expansion represents one of the most significant financial assistance overhauls in higher education history, confirming Harvard's commitment to removing financial obstacles for outstanding students.
Harvard Free Tuition Fees: Are Indians Eligible?
Harvard has introduced a new financial aid policy to support families at different income levels:
- Families earning $100,000 or less: All costs, including tuition, housing, food, and fees, are fully covered. Students also receive a $2,000 grant in their first year and another $2,000 grant in their junior year.
- Families earning between $100,000 and $200,000: Tuition is completely covered. Additional financial aid for housing and other expenses depends on the family's financial situation.
- Families earning over $200,000: Financial aid is available but not guaranteed.
This Harvard policy is only applicable to the native residents of US.
Why Did Harvard Take this Decision?
Harvard President Alan M. Garber described the decision as a long-term investment in accessibility.
"We want the most bright students to attend Harvard, regardless of their financial situation. By eliminating tuition prices for the majority of American families, we ensure that education remains a right rather than a privilege."
Harvard's decision follows similar actions taken by Princeton and Stanford, both of which have expanded financial help for middle-income families.
Harvard Financial Aid Support
Harvard has been increasing financial aid for families over the years:
Year | Financial Aid Expansion |
2004 | Started the Harvard Financial Aid Initiative (HFAI), covering tuition for families earning $40,000 or less. |
2012 | Increased the income limit to $65,000 for full tuition coverage. |
2023 | Expanded full coverage to families earning $85,000 or less. |
2025 | Raised the threshold to $200,000, making Harvard tuition-free for most U.S. families. |
