Netaji Subhas University of Technology (NSUT) is one of the premier engineering institutions in the country, and it has undergone a significant transformation in recent years, not just academically but also in its official designation. While it is now known by its university status as NSUT (Netaji Subhas University of Technology), many of the students and alumni know this university by a different name. 

The Netaji Subhas University of Technology (NSUT) was initially established and was popularly known for many years as Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology (NSIT), and even before this, it was known as the Delhi Institute of Technology. This article discusses the journey of this university.

From NSIT to NSUT: Name Change and University Status

The transfer of Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology (NSIT) to Netaji Subhas University of Technology (NSUT) is an important milestone in the institution’s history. This was more than just renaming the institute; it was a transformation in its status, autonomy, and academic scope.

  • To fulfil the expanding demand for people in the field of technology, the then-Delhi administration, with the approval of MHRD, created a new engineering college called the Delhi Institute of Technology (DIT) in July 1983.

  • In 1983, the institute began an undergraduate program in Electronics and Communication Engineering with an intake of 45 students from the Faculty of Technology at the University of Delhi.

  • New programs in Computer Engineering, Instrumentation and Control Engineering, and Manufacturing Processes and Automation Engineering were introduced later.

  • Administrative autonomy to the institute was granted in 1986.

  • On June 12, 1987, the Institute was registered as a Society under the Societies Registration Act under the nameDelhi Institute of Technology’ (DIT).

  • The institute launched PhD programs in 1989 and developed a number of PG programs, four of which were authorised by the AICTE in 1994.

  • The institute was renamed ‘Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology’ (NSIT) in 1997. 

  • On September 26, 2018, the institute changed its name from Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology (NSIT) to Netaji Subhas University of Technology (NSUT).
